The forest won’t grow back …

Alessandro Marazzi Sassoon and Kong Meta, (Phnom Penh Post, Friday 23 June 2017) reported on the results of the April 2016 forest fire at Prek Toal and how the environment needs our help to recover.

“A few charred skeletons of once-proud trees dot the landscape, and while some shrubs remain, creeping vines now dominate the plain.  The vines cut out the light and rapidly draw nutrients from the soil, all of which may handicap the growth of trees.

‘The forest won’t grow back … It’s going to be completely stalled by the plowing and cultivation.  The process of land conversion for agriculture that was already taking place is now vastly accelerated.

The problem is we’re heading for a double whammy – dams are ongoing and Tonle Sap flooded forest destruction is ongoing.’ (Mahood, WCS, Wildlife Conservation Society)

The Greening Prek Toal project brings together Prek Toal villagers, local and wider community members and international sponsors to help the flooded forest recover and provide the best possible environment for our future.
